Persimmon Homes creates haven for endangered species in Pickering

A leading house developer has revealed a stunning new development in North Yorkshire which caters not only for new house hunters, but also for an endangered species.

Persimmon Homes Yorkshire has worked closely with environmental consultancy firm, SLR Consulting, to help provide a sanctuary for a colony of protected newts, at its recently opened site in Pickering.

A wildlife friendly corridor has been created along the entire length of the eastern boundary at the site to provide new homes for the great crested newt, the largest of the three native British newts and one of the most heavily protected species in Britain.

Speaking of the new development, Kevin Thubron, sales director for Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and are passionate about designing homes that are sensitive to the environment in which they are built.”

Situated in close proximity to the North York Moors, the Moorlands development features 35 properties.

Gary Oliver, ecological consultant from SLR Consulting, who managed the Pickering development, said: “The new corridor will dramatically improve the habitat for the newt population in this area. This species is very localised in its distribution so it is important that the correct habitat is created for them to thrive.

“The 6m x 1m corridor at the Moorlands site has been landscaped with rocks, rubble and logs to enhance the newt’s habitat. We hope to create a giant hibernacula linking newts from the surrounding areas using the new corridor. As well as the corridor two small ponds have been created for the newts.”

A Chedworth show home opened its doors at Moorlands recently, celebrating the new development which features eight different property styles.

Kevin added: “Surrounded by beautiful scenery and the nearby North York Moors, these homes are ideal for anyone who has a passion for the great outdoors and wildlife.

“With the opening of the Chedworth show home visitors will be able to explore the quality four bedroom detached property which is an ideal retreat for families and professionals alike.”
