Cornish man pedals back to work

A Cornwall pensioner has marked his retirement after 50 years in the motor industry by going back to work.

Richard Shadbolt, 65, from Probus, will return three days a week to Carrs Volkswagen Van Centre in Indian Queens, because he says he would miss it too much if he were to leave.

He joined Volkswagen in 1975, and has been with Carrs Volkswagen Van Centre for 17 years. Previously the technician worked for other manufacturers after starting work in 1962, as a fresh-faced 15-year-old.

Richard is a very familiar sight in the local area on two wheels rather than four – because for the last six years he has cycled the 20 miles commute to and from work on his bike.

In that time he has clocked up an astonishing 30,000 miles.

“Cycling to work is something I have done for years, long before I came to Carrs Volkswagen Van Centre,” said Richard. “I have no idea how many miles I must have done altogether.

“I’m so happy to be carrying on at Carrs Volkswagen Van Centre as I really enjoy my work and would it miss it too much if I were to leave.

“Three days a week will be perfect, because it will give me chance to enjoy some DIY and gardening, visit all the places I want to see in Cornwall, and enjoy some quality time with my two grandchildren.”

Head of business at Carrs Volkswagen Van Centre, David Gilbert, said: “Richard has been an outstanding member of staff and one we all enjoy working with.

“I am delighted that he has agreed to stay on three days a week, and hope that he remains fit and well enough to carry on cycling.

“He is an example to all his colleagues and other, of how dedication, a desire to succeed and a healthy lifestyle can lead to a long career.”
