New dad embarks on career inspired by son

A young motor enthusiast from Gwersyllt has embarked on an exclusive three-year training programme with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Gareth Davis has been accepted by Wrexham’s Volkswagen Van Centre, to be the latest recruit on the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next few years Volkswagen Van Centre Wrexham will invest nearly £40,000 to train the 21-year-old through to technician status.

Gareth has previously worked as an apprentice technician until he was forced to relinquish the role when his family moved, so the van centre is looking to fast track him through to the final year of the apprenticeship, subject to him reaching the required standard.

He has motivation for this career move as he became a dad in 2012 and this has inspired Gareth to forge a career for himself and make his son, Alfie, proud of his father.

He said: “I’ve worked around cars from a fairly young age, but a series of life events meant I was not on the career path I wanted.

“Becoming a dad suddenly changed things and I’m know starting out on a long road following the career of my choosing.

“Alfie is my inspiration and I want to make him proud of me and give him everything he needs when growing up.

“I’ve tried various roles since leaving school, and even took a B-Tec at Yale Science College, but the pull of working on vehicles eventually made me ask about work at Volkswagen Van Centre Wrexham and a potential long term career.”

The move completes a family circle for Gareth as his dad was the service manager at Wrexham Volkswagen in the 1990s.

“It’s a little weird to know that my dad has worked here and I’ll be looking to follow in his footsteps, but first of all it’s all about qualifying from the apprenticeship.

“I am over the moon to I be given this opportunity and very grateful to Volkswagen Van Centre Wrexham for giving me this chance.

“This is a great opportunity for me and I want to show everyone how much this apprenticeship means to me.”

Volkswagen Van Centre Wrexham’s service manager, David Harries, said: “Gareth has a great self-determination about him and his desire to find a career within this industry through a proactive approach to the van centre made him the right candidate for this apprenticeship.

“He has a great passion for the industry and I’m confident he will come through the apprenticeship with flying colours.

“Even after just a few weeks here, Gareth is already showing his skills and is very much part of our team at Volkswagen Van Centre Wrexham.”
