Persimmon West Midlands has chipped in to help create a walking trail which links more than 30 places of historical interest within a new community.
The region, acting as part of the Lawley Village Developer Group (LVDG) consortium, contributed £500 towards the new Lawley and Overdale History Trail.
A brand new community – including 3,300 houses, a commercial centre and a school – is being built in the parish by the LVDG, which has created a Community Chest fund to support projects in the area.’The Trail celebrates the rich history of the parish, which dates back to medieval times.
Sharon George, clerk of Lawley and Overdale Parish Council, said: “The trail is important for newcomers as it will make them aware of what was here before. For existing parishioners it will be a welcome record of the past. It is hoped the trail will help all residents appreciate what is on their doorstep.”
Lawley and Overdale Parish Council first came up with the idea two years ago. The seven-mile circuit utilises established public rights of way, footpaths and cycle paths and links 35 points of interest. The parish council has produced a free 44-page Trail Guide for walkers.
Guy Scott, project director for LVDG, said: “The Community Chest allows worthy causes within Lawley Village, such as the History Trail, to apply for extra funds to continue their good work. This Trail will be a great way for walkers to explore the history of the parish.”
The trail runs through Lawley, Newdale, Overdale, The Rock, Old Park, Dawley Bank and Lawley Bank. Among the Trail highlights are the Grade 2 listed Tram Bridge in Newdale, St John’s Church Lawley, Rock Chapel and Lawley House.
Part of the trail is wheelchair accessible, and also featured are lost treasures such as an insight into Abraham Darby’s Newdale Village and the Rock Colliery.
David Wright MP joined Councillor Darren Blackburn to formally open the Trail last September.
All types of community groups, charitable organisations, teams, clubs, schools and colleges can apply for funding through the Community Chest. A maximum of £500 can be applied for at one time and priority will be given to those projects directly benefiting the people of Lawley Village.
