Cape to cape record breaker drives into Crewe Volkswagen

A renowned endurance driving, world record breaker is bringing the story of his latest adventure to Crewe.

Rainer Zietlow’s Cape to Cape challenge last September saw him drive more than 17,800km in less than 10 days.

Rainer, of Mannheim in Germany, completed the ultimate road trip from North Cape, Norway, to Cape Agulhas, South Africa in a Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI.

The Touareg was essentially a standard production car; its only modifications were the addition of a rollover cage and two auxiliary fuel tanks for a driving range of over 3,000 kilometres per fuel stop.

For his first British talk on the epic adventure – with video highlights – Rainer will be at Crewe Volkswagen at 2.30pm on Saturday, February 14, along with 4×4 he used.

Crewe Volkswagen was selected as the venue in order to showcase the business’s recent success in being named 2014 best Retailer of the year in Volkswagen’s UK network.

Team leader Rainer Zietlow was accompanied by Marius Biela, a photographer and video productions specialist, and Matthias Prillwitz, an experienced participant of Rally Germany. During the record-breaking marathon, the team drove around the clock in a three-shift system that was only interrupted for diesel refuelling stops, meal times and the usual formalities at country borders.

Ben Gilbert, brand manager at Crewe Volkswagen, said: “We are really excited to be welcoming Rainer, and his Touareg, and can’t wait to hear his first-hand account of the Cape to Cape challenge.

“Everybody is welcome to join us – customers, locals, car enthusiasts – for what promises to be an action packed, whistle stop tour of a very exciting 10 days.”

Zietlow began his numerous global tours in 2005. He has set two world previous world records in 2011 and 2012: The ‘Panamerican’ from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska in 11 days and 17 hours, and the ‘Russtralia’ from Melbourne to St. Petersburg in 17 days and 18 hours.

The Valentine’s Day talk ties in with the Volkswagen’s 10 day national SUV event, which begins on February 13. Offers include a £2,750 deposit contribution on Tiguan’s if bought on Solutions Finance, along with three years free service, and a staggering £5,000 off a Touareg if bought on Solutions Finance and three years free service. Both offers only apply if vehicles bought during the SUV event.
