Telford goes kite crazy

A kaleidoscope of kites will greet visitors to Telford Shopping Centre over the next two weeks, with a host of high-flying activities planned for Bank Holiday Weekend.

Families can take part in free kite-making workshops, hundreds of kites are up for grabs in a treasure trail competition and everyone is invited to become part of a huge celebratory mural.

The activities are set to get Telford shoppers and visitors ready for the West Midlands Kite Festival taking place in Telford Town Park on Sunday 4th September (11am-4pm). The event is being run by Telford & Wrekin Council in partnership with the shopping centre and is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Telford.

Glynn Morrow, Telford Shopping Centre manager, said: “The kite festival promises to be a stunning addition to Telford’s calendar and a fantastic day out for the whole family.

“We are going to be taking up the kite theme for a series of events and activity in the Centre over the August Bank Holiday, to encourage as many people as possible to join in with this great initiative.”

To help local people prepare for the event Telford Shopping Centre will host the free kite-making workshops in New Row (near House of Fraser) on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 27-29th August from 10am until 4pm.

Everyone visiting the Centre during the Bank Holiday weekend will also be asked to strike a pose and become part of a special art installation. The Centre’s photographer will be capturing local people against a green screen in The Border with their pictures being incorporated into a vibrant mural, to be unveiled on September 3rd.

The Centre itself will be decorated with 100 colourful kites, all of which can be won by following a trail of kites around the centre and finding a hidden codeword. Competition entry forms are available from the Customer Service desk and the closing date is 10th September.

Telford Kite Festival takes place in the Telford Town Park QEII Fields In Trust Arena.

The free event – put on in conjunction with West Midlands Kite Fliers Association and supported by Telford Shopping Centre – will run from 11am to 4pm.

Residents and visitors are being encouraged to bring a picnic and there will also be a range of food and drink stalls to enjoy.
