Apprentice gets a new appointment in motorsport

A young car enthusiast from West Cumbrian has been selected from many other motorsport fanatics to lead a UK rally team.

Daniel Hannon, from High Harrington, who is learning his trade as a car apprentice technician at Workington Volkswagen retailer Walkingshaw, was only recently accepted to be part of the new Volkswagen motorsport team.

After his hard work and dedication, he has now been appointed to the team manager role.

The process to be a part of the team alone was extremely competitive, after Volkswagen receiving over 300 applications from apprentices all over the UK for just 12 positions.

Daniel said: “I’m thrilled that I have been given this rare opportunity to apply my knowledge and enthusiasm to motorsport.

“To be given the top role in the team is an honour and I hope we can provide a car that will be competitive in events this year.

“I owe a great deal to Walkingshaw and Volkswagen, they’ve given me so much already with my apprenticeship and it feels like this is the icing on the cake – I’m really excited.”

Walkingshaw’s brand manager, Andy Walkingshaw, said: “Daniel has proved to be exceptionally driven and everyone at Walkingshaw is delighted for him securing such a prestigious position.

“He has great passion about his job and his hard work for not only the team, but for Volkswagen has paid off.

“It is great for the region to have a representative working for a national team and someone who has such passion and motivation about the Volkswagen brand. I am confident Daniel will go far in his career.”
