Higgs opens its doors to Age UK silver surfers

A leading Midlands law firm has opened its doors to give a group from Age UK an insight into the internet with a special IT taster session.

Higgs & Sons was introduced to the group from Wolverhampton Age UK by Business in the Community (BITC). The law firm paid for the group to travel to its Black Country headquarters where volunteers presented on the history of the internet, held practical sessions, a quiz and an awards ceremony.

Stephen Brown, Higgs’ IT director, explained: “We really value the community in which we work and have been working with BITC for the last year on a diverse range of projects.

“My role at Higgs enables the staff in the firm to have access to all the technologies they need to perform to the best of their abilities in their roles. I have a huge appreciation for the benefits that using the internet brings and we wanted to share some of our experience and expertise with those who have never really had the opportunity to use the web.”

Doris Griffiths, one of the Age UK participants on the day, said that she and the group thoroughly enjoyed their visit: “I’ve had an amazing day and I’m really pleased that I came. Everyone has been so lovely and I’ve really enjoyed myself. Plus I’ve learnt a few handy hints and tips to help me get started.”

The day was also enjoyed by the 10 volunteers from Higgs including Alison Rae, the firm’s information and knowledge manager. “I’m so pleased that the IT taster session was so well received. It was one of the best days I’ve had during my five years with the firm,” concluded Alison.

Higgs & Sons works from two offices in the Black Country – Waterfront Business Park in Brierley Hill and Kingswinford. The firm employs over 200 people, which includes more than 100 specialist lawyers.
