Malvern centrepiece is unveiled

A stunning new sculpture designed as part of a unique collaboration between a leading house builder and the community has been unveiled in Malvern.

Sculptor John Merrill has designed the new artwork – entitled Copse – to form the centrepiece of the Persimmon Homes phase of Charles Church’s Skylark Meadows development.

John worked with pupils from the neighbouring Dyson Perrins School on the design, which takes its name from the Reme Copse area in which it stands.

A partnership involving Charles Church, John, the school, community and Malvern Hills District Council has helped bring the sculpture to life during a two-year project.

Now installed at the development, the piece was officially unveiled at a special event held last week.

Alison Reading, sales and marketing manager at Charles Church South Midlands, said she was delighted with the oak artwork.

“This sculpture will stand at the heart of the development and symbolise the positive relationship between ourselves, the local community, school and council.

“We first came up with the idea two years ago and a lot of hard work and effort by a great number of people has helped produce something of which we can all be proud.”

Sculptor John, from Llangollen in North Wales, said: “The tree I used for Copse was donated by Charles Church and delivered to my workshop in Wales. I worked with pupils at Dyson Perrins to come up with designs, looking at all elements associated with the site.

“The pupils developed drawings and small models before making larger cardboard sculptures. I played with some of their ideas and developed the design by making a small wooden maquette. Then I cut the tree up into seven pieces, each influenced by the pupils’ designs. The piece as a whole reminded me of a copse before I made the connection with the name of the site.”

Amanda Smith, Community Services Manager for Malvern Hills District Council added: “This is a fantastic sculpture that has been designed by the local community for the local community. The installation which celebrates the heritage of the site adds another layer to the story of the area and will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
