Housebuilder saves Macob jobs

Persimmon Homes has today announced it has recruited 35 staff to work in a new groundworks operative division, all of which are former Macob employees made redundant earlier this month.

The leading housebuilder will be the first developers in Wales and the UK to employ an internal groundworks operative team – the innovative move will enable homes to be built more efficiently in future.

Following the news that 145 staff at property and construction group Macob in Cardiff lost their jobs after the company entered administration, Persimmon quickly took the decision to set up their own division.

The housebuilder had employed Macob to work on four of its housing developments in Aberdare, Cwmbran, Llanelli and Swansea, the difficulties within the company had caused delays on the sites.

To alleviate any further hold ups and to protect the business in the future, Persimmon’s Manager Director, Martin Smith of East Wales and Huw Llewellyn, Managing Director of West Wales, took the decision to create an internal department enabling them to employ 35 new staff members with a view to employing more in the future.

New management team members, Gwyn Thomas and Ian Scannell, both former Macob employees, have been recruited and will be joined by on site groundworks supervisors, Carwyn Williams and Terry Preece.

MD Martin Smith, said: “Following the sad news that a number of Macob companies ceased to trade, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve employed 35 new staff members who were made redundant as a result.

“This brings an exciting new prospect to the way we do business, setting us apart from our competitors – it will enable us to be more competitive, in control and better informed on our sites. We’ll be able to deliver the highest standards and the best quality homes that we are renowned for in Wales.”

Persimmon has revealed new developments which will open in 2014 include Hawthorn in Pontypridd, Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Newport Gwent, Church Village, Birchgrove in Swansea, Barry and sites in Bridgend and Llanelli.

The plans also include 450 new homes in Pembrokeshire where there is a considerable housing shortage – the new developments will include Bush Hill near Pembroke, Lamphey and Haverfordwest.
