A Scunthorpe housebuilder has confirmed its commitment to a new community garden, by contributing towards the cost of creating a focal point for local people.
The Persimmon Homes Lakeside development will be supporting the St Peter and St Paul CE Primary School Community Garden Project, which is expected to begin in September.
The garden will be situated at the entrance of the school, off Redshank Drive, and will feature a selection of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers for both the pupils and the wider community to enjoy.
Headteacher, Katie McGuire, said: “As the school is situated within a brand new housing development an entirely new neighbourhood is growing around us and we wanted to do something to help bring the community together.
“The area we are dedicating to the garden has already established itself as a central gathering spot. We will regenerate the ground to help enrich the pupils understanding of gardening and the benefits it can bring. We also intend to encourage greater engagement with the growing community.
Persimmon Homes was the first business to step forward to support the project with parcel delivery company, DHL, also agreeing to help.
Kevin Thubron, sales director at Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “We are not just about building homes but helping to build communities so we were more than happy to support the school’s community garden project with a financial contribution.
“Our Lakeside development is just a 10 minute walk from the school and we have already sold a number of properties to young families and couples who will directly benefit from the school and garden for many years to come.”
Mrs McGuire added: “We were delighted to secure Persimmon’s support and this encouraged us to develop our garden project ideas. We believe that teaching isn’t just about being in a classroom; it is about giving children hands-on experience to help them understand their natural environment and all it has to offer.
“As part of the project we will also be promoting volunteering so the community can get involved in caring for the garden to help maximise its potential and encourage more wildlife to the area.
“We would welcome the support of any other businesses or gardening experts willing to help bring our garden to fruition.”
