Higgs & Sons helps budding entrepreneurs

A West Midlands law firm has joined forces with a business start-up project to offer a series of workshops to budding entrepreneurs.

Higgs & Sons has led three legal workshops for start-ups on the six month SPEED Plus project, offering an introduction to key legal themes in business.

SPEED Plus is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and aims to help create new businesses within the West Midlands. The project is led by the University of Wolverhampton in partnership with Birmingham City University, Coventry University, Keele University and Staffordshire University.

Jamie Partington, a member of the corporate team at Higgs & Sons, said: “We have delivered three legal workshops for SPEED Plus so far this year, offering advice to hundreds of delegates. The format of the events is fluid, with a presentation, Q&A session and workshop.

“We are really happy to be part of an ongoing partnership with SPEED Plus that is helping to shape and nurture the entrepreneurs of the future, providing crucial legal advice at the outset which may otherwise be overlooked.”

SPEED Plus offers specialist consultancy, development, advice, help and support to current students, graduates, alumni, staff and partners from any subject area/industry to start and run their own business along with their studies, after graduation or alongside employment in a supportive environment.

Project manager at SPEED Plus, Phil Law, said: “Setting up your own business is a legal minefield, and the workshops delivered by Higgs & Sons help make our young business people aware of what is required of them.

“From the benefits of incorporation to terms of business and shareholders agreements, through to essential employment law advice and intellectual property issues, the information provided is invaluable, and we are delighted to be working with Higgs & Sons in order to provide this vital area of the programme.”

Higgs & Sons is based in the heart of the Black Country at the Waterfront Business Park in Brierley Hill. The growing team now boasts 100 plus specialist lawyers available to support clients in a comprehensive range of business and private sectors.
