Children at an Oakham school were given a taste of the construction industry when they were taken behind the scenes at one of the biggest housing developments the town has seen.
Eight-year-olds from Catmose Primary School made the short journey to Charles Church’s Thorpe Manor development, part of the Oakham Heights scheme.
The 32 children donned colourful hard hats which they had designed in class.
They had a chance to see construction in progress at the site and were told about The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident’s SPLAAT campaign, drilling home the message of Safe Play At All Times.
Philip Torr, Construction Manager at Charles Church East Midlands, said: “We were delighted to welcome the children of Catmose Primary School to our Thorpe Manor development.
“They looked absolutely fantastic in their colourful hats. Catmose obviously has some very talented pupils.
“We love to engage with the communities in which we are active and the children really enjoyed looking around at the big diggers and machinery.
“We challenged the children to spot SPLAAT banners around the site and I’m confident that they went home with a better understanding of the needs to be safe on building sites.”
Class teacher Miss Emily Redding said: “We’re really grateful to Charles Church East Midlands for giving us the chance to visit Thorpe Manor.
“Activities like this help children in learn in a different way. They enjoyed looking around the site. Who knows, maybe there are budding builders amongst them.”
