Fundraising fathers raise thousands for charity

A group of fathers who raised over £7,000 for charity have thanked a Bury business for its support.

Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen sponsored the ‘Three dads in a Jag’ team who recently took part in a unique driving challenge, The Wacky Rally; with approximately 80 teams from across the world taking part, the Wacky Rally is a banger race covering five different countries over six days.

The team of Brian Reynolds, Andrew Laycock and Jason Brierley, all from Norden in Rochdale, undertook the challenge in a British racing-green coloured 1993 Jaguar Sovereign.

All three took turns at the wheel to generate funds for Help for Heroes and Rochdale Rugby Union under 15s 2012 summer tour.

The challenge began in Lille, France and then headed south taking in the Swiss, French and Italian mountain passes, before continuing on to the Italian and French Rivera’s and finishing in Barcelona.

After completing the 2,800 mile cross-country challenge the team thanked all supporters, including Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen Bury, which was the main sponsor of the vehicle.

Speaking of the challenge, Jason Brierley, sales manager at Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen, said: “The rally was a fantastic experience and gave us the opportunity to visit some stunning locations.

“Having spent between six and seven hours in the car and averaging 600 to 700 miles each day, I now have a new found appreciation for all those who drive as a profession.”

“Thanks to all our sponsors we’ve raised a huge amount for both our good causes and this is something we’re all very proud of.”

Smith Knight Fay’s brand manager, Steve Thomas, was one of the first to welcome the team home.

He said: “Everyone at the retailer is thrilled to hear of the team’s success in completing the race in this classic vehicle.

“We were more than happy to support such an impressive feat and worthy causes.”

The team continue with their fundraising efforts and hope to increase the total raised to £20,000 for their chosen charities. Donations can be received at http://www.justgiving.com/corinne-brierley.
